Broadband networking specialist Ciena Corp. recorded fiscal Q1 net income of $11.1 million (12 cents per diluted share), versus a year-ago net loss of $6.3 million (8 cents per share).

The company posted quarterly revenues of $165.1 million, up 37.1 percent versus a year ago, when it had sales of $120.4 million.

During the quarter, Ciena scored a set of new cable deployments. Among them, Cox Communications deployed the company's CoreDirector Multiservice Optical Switches for a "super headend" in San Diego that interconnected two metro rings. Cogeco Cable, meanwhile, became Ciena's first cable network deployment for the Canada market following its use of Ciena's CN 4200 for a core infrastructure upgrade.
