Verizon formally introduced V CAST Mobile TV, an on-the-go "broadcast-quality" video service the telco expects to launch commercially in Q1 2007.

The live, 24/7 TV service will kick off with a programming lineup that includes CBS, Comedy Central, Fox, MTV, NBC News, NBC Entertainment and Nickelodeon, with others expected to sign on.

Verizon's mobile TV offering will be based on technology from MediaFLO USA -- a wholly-owned division of Qualcomm Inc. -- that specializes in video delivered in a linear format.

Handsets that will support the service off the bat include the Samsung SCH-u620 and LG VX9400. Verizon said it will announce pricing for V CAST Mobile TV service and supported handsets, as well as market availability, when the service is launched.
