NDS Group posts higher Q2 on increased security fees, added smart cards

NEW YORK (AP)  -- NDS Group PLC, a unit of media conglomerate News Corp. that supplies digital pay-TV technology, said Tuesday its fiscal second-quarter profit grew 17 percent due to higher security fees and more smart cards delivered to new customers in Europe, China and India.

Net income rose to $30.3 million, or 52 cents a share, from $26 million, or 45 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue rose 8 percent to $165.1 million from $152.2 million in the same period in 2005.

On average, analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial were looking for profit of 53 cents per share on sales of $165 million.

Active digital TV smart cards grew to 69.9 million from 61.4 million a year earlier, while DVR set-top boxes deployed at the end of the period totaled 5.3 million, more than double last year's 2 million.
