Conexant introduces VDSL2 CPE chips
Conexant Systems debuted a new family of IC products for VDSL2 customer premises equipment (CPE), and introduced the second generation of its Accelity chipset for converged VDSL2/ADSL2+ central office (CO) equipment.
The new VDSL2 SOCs (system-on-chip) can be used in a variety of voice/video/data CPE ranging from VDSL2 voice-enabled gateways to basic bridges.
The VDSL2 chips are based on a flexible architecture that supports all VDSL2 profiles up to "30a" (up to 100 Mbps symmetrical), and are available in 30 MHz or 17 MHz bandwidth and two-pair bonded configurations enabling cost-optimized products for fiber-to-the-building (FTTB), fiber-to-the-node (FTTN), and CO deployments.
The new VDSL2 SOCs also have an integrated hardware accelerator engine that enables up to 1 Gbps throughput; a dedicated voice digital signal processor (DSP) to support two simultaneous VoIP channels; and also include CPE technology that Conexant claims significantly improves VDSL performance by reducing interference on copper lines, enabling operators to increase their subscriber coverage area.
CPE based on these chips can also be combined with products incorporating Conexant's new Accelity-2 central CO silicon.
Conexant simultaneously announced its second-generation Accelity-2 chipset for products such as digital subscriber line access multiplexers (DSLAMs), digital loop carriers (DLCs), and remote terminals.
The company said the new chipset can deliver downstream speeds in excess of 140 Mbps, supporting bandwidth-consuming applications such as IPTV, VOD, and online gaming.
Conexant said Alcatel-Lucent has selected Accelity-2 for its DSL products for deployments in Europe and elsewhere. Conexant has also secured North American and Asian design-wins with Calix, Huawei, NEC, Schmid Telecom, and ZTE.
Both the new VDSL2 SOCs and the Accelity-2 chipset are available in sample quantities. VDSL2 SOCs will range from $24 to $30 each in volume. The Accelity-2 will be $12 per port in volume quantities. Complete reference designs and a modular evaluation and development platform are also available.
