Cisco Systems Corp. led the ROADM (reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer) sector in Q3 with a 31 percent chunk of the market, according to Infonetics.

Fujitsu followed with 27 percent, and OpVista Inc. clocked in at 10 percent, good for third position, marking some ground gained on the market's traditional leaders.

"It is evident that the legacy networking leaders such as Cisco and Fujitsu are seeing new competition coming up rapidly," said Infonetics Principal Analyst & Co-founder Michael Howard, in a statement. "Service providers are trusting that ROADM technology is mature, and so are choosing specialist players such as OpVista who has shown good growth in the last two quarters."

Howard estimates that WDM-based systems will "slowly displace SONET/SDH over the next 15-20 years."
