ADT secures cable integration

ADT Security Systems said a handful of cable operators have confirmed that their facilities-based IP telephony networks "meet the characteristics required" by the security company's alarm transmission system.

MSOs that meet ADT's requirements include Comcast Corp., Time Warner Cable, Cablevision Systems Corp., Charter Communications, Cox Communications and Bright House Networks.

Some characteristics outlined by ADT include whether the service provider operates a "managed and maintained physical facilities network" coupled with disaster recovery plans.

If an IP-based phone services provider has not informed ADT that it meets such criteria, the company said it will continue to require customers to either keep their "traditional" phone line or install a cellular transmission system.

On the latter, ADT sells a "Safewatch Cellular Backup" system, which lists for $249.

ADT is the latest home security firm to announce specific integration arrangements with cable-delivered VoIP systems. Earlier this month, Brink's Home Security announced a partnership with Comcast.
