Not a week goes by without a municipality announcing it is entering the high-speed arena with a Wi-Fi network that, on many occasions, competes with data offerings from cable or telco service operators. But how many of these deployments are out there?
Thanks to some research from Muni-Wireless, we at last have a decent snapshot. In an update posted last month, they found that there are at least 68 city- or county-wide wireless broadband networks in operation for public access and municipal use, 43 city "hotzones," and 135 planned deployments, meaning at least an RFI or RFP has been issued.
