EarthLink Inc. said the City of Pasadena has given the company the green light "to enter into negotiations" on the building and operation of a 23-square-mile wireless network.
The subsequent municipal WiFi-based mesh network, to be owned by EarthLink, will be used for commercial and government use, as well as for Internet access for residents.
The service will offer a symmetrical 1 Mbps connection, said EarthLink, which has had a corporate presence in Pasadena since 1994, and presently employs 400 people there.
As part of its agreement, EarthLink will allow competing providers to offer services to consumers over its network.
Interestingly, EarthLink cites PeoplePC as one of those "competing providers," despite the fact that PeoplePC is a sister company to EarthLink.
