Startup Imagine Communications is preparing a PersonalizedTV platform called the Quality On Demand Gateway system. Imagine's initial QOD Gateway product is focused on the MPEG-2 VOD cable market and is on schedule for field trials later this year.

The QOD Gateway will use new statistical multiplexing technology the companies say will dramatically improve bandwidth efficiency and video quality.

Imagine said it used Teja Technologies' NP Software Platform to get to market with its initial product in under a year.
With the QOD Gateway, up to 15 variable bit rate (VBR) VOD streams can share the same 256 QAM channel with equivalent quality relative to today's maximum of 10 constant bit rate (CBR) VOD streams, according to Imagine Communications. Similarly, 3 HD-VOD VBR streams can occupy a 256 QAM channel vs. today's maximum of 2 HD-VOD CBR streams.
