T-Online Hungary to trial Alcatel/Microsoft IPTV solution

T-Online Hungary, a group member of Deutsche Telekom and Hungary's largest Internet access provider, has decided to test IPTV equipment from Alcatel and IPTV software from Microsoft TV.

The pilot project was divided into a technical lab trial, two field trials and a public market trial. The technical lab trial was concluded at the end of January 2006. The first field trial (which included 18 broadcast TV channels, VOD and PVR) was recently evaluated, and based on the results, a second extended field trial, this one with 500 users, enhanced quality and more TV channels, is ongoing. The public market trial is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2006.

Alcatel said it is currently involved in more than 35 IPTV/triple play projects worldwide. Microsoft TV claims 10 providers (AT&T, BT, Deutsche Telekom, Slovak Telekom, Swisscom/Bluewin, TDC, Telecom Italia, T-Online France, Verizon and have committed to commercial deployments of its IPTV platform, with another five in trials (T-Online Hungary, BellSouth, Bell Canada, Telkom South Africa and Reliance Infocomm).
