* Entone swings with Widevine
Entone Technologies has integrated a downloadable conditional access system from Widevine Technologies with its Hydra IP video gateway, a device that distributes IPTV signals over existing home coax lines.

Under the deal, Entone is employing Widevine's Cypher Suite, a software-centric conditional access and digital rights management system.

* Envivio plugs in MPEG-4
Envivio announced an IPTV Triple Play solution featuring MPEG-4 middleware on a Sigma Designs-based H.264 consumer set-top box.

The company will demonstrate at the NAB show in Las Vegas later this month a system in which both SD and HD IP video will be encoded by Envivio encoders. Content for VOD services will be delivered via Envivio's 4Sight streaming server. Envivio will create an electronic program guide (EPG) using the interactive components defined in MPEG-4.

IP video content and the EPG are delivered to the consumer set-top box as MPEG-4 streams and managed by the Envivio 4Front middleware server. 4Front can deliver synchronized applications and messages to enable advanced services such as SMS texting, betting and voting.

* RUS okays Corning Cable Systems optical drop cables
Corning Cable Systems, part of Corning's Telecommunications segment, has been granted Rural Utilities Service (RUS) acceptance for SST-Drop Dielectric, Toneable and Armored Cables. The cable family is intended primarily for operation in the last portion of an all-optical network (such as FTTH).

The RUS, a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, offers loans and grants in order to increase the rate of deployment of technology to small towns in rural areas.

* Earthlink closes on New Edge purchase
Earthlink has completed its acquisition of New Edge Networks in a stock-and-cash deal valued at around $138 million. The deal was announced in December. EarthLink said it plans to keep New Edge's 345 employees and the New Edge brand, and keep the company operating in Vancouver, Wash.

New Edge is a national provider of virtual private networks (VPNs), secure multi-site managed data networks, and dedicated Internet access for businesses and communications carriers.
