German fixed-line incumbent Deutsche Telekom has selected French telecoms equipment vendor Alcatel to provide IP solutions for its high-speed fibre-optic network.
According to the terms of the deal, Alcatel's IP/MPLS-based solutions portfolio will be part of the 3 billion-euro (US$3.6 billion) VDSL platform deployed by Deutsche Telekom's fixed-line and broadband unit, T-Com.
Significance: T-Com is rolling out the VDSL broadband network in 10 major German cities, including Berlin (the capital), Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg and Stuttgart. The IP solutions provided by Alcatel will enable services, such as IPTV and interactive consumer services.
This deployment is in line with Deutsche Telekom's announcement to create a high-tech broadband platform for IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) applications, including high-definition television (HDTV) over the Internet, and will enable Deutsche Telecom to launch triple-play services.
