DirecTV said it will use Harmonic Inc. gear to encode standard-definition fare for the advanced MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) codec.

Under the deal, the DBS provider will tap the DiviCom MV 100 encoder. DirecTV has also deployed Harmonic's DiviTrackXE closed loop statistical multiplexing platform and NMX Digital Service Manager, a video monitoring and control system.

The MV 100 is designed to encode video for multiple codecs, including MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and VC-1.

Until recently, the bulk of DirecTV's H.264 business has gone to Tandberg Television, and most of that toward the DBS service provider's ambitious high-definition television expansion.
