EchoStar Communications turned up its local-into-local plans Thursday with the launch of area high-definition networks in Los Angeles and New York City.

In Los Angeles, EchoStar is offering HD feeds of ABC (KABC), CBS (KCBS), NBC (KNBC) and Fox (KTTV). The following HD network feeds are now available from EchoStar in NYC: ABC (WABC), CBS (WCBS), NBC (WNBC) and Fox (WNYW).

The addition of local SD and HD feeds will cost $5 per month.

EchoStar said new customers who sign up for the DishHD package through a local RadioShack before Feb. 28 are eligible for next-day installation.

Leveraging new receivers that can handle both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 feeds, EchoStar plans to launch local HD channels in as many as 50 markets in 2006. EchoStar's first MPEG-2/MPEG-4 hybrid, the ViP211, sells for $49.99 for "new lease customers."
