Following earlier field tests, Adelphia Communications and Cox Communications have approved VCom Inc.'s "CableVista" edge decoder.

VCom's 1-RU (rack-unit) platform is designed to handle edge MPEG decoding, analog modulation and upconversion for up to 24 NTSC/PAL channels. The device can also handle baseband and RF outputs, the company said.

VCom also markets an edge QAM, dubbed "VistaLynx." Operators are enlisting both products for video-on-demand and digital simulcast, a technique that replicates analog channels in the digital domain.
