VDSL chipset specialist Ikanos Communications has inked a $30 million deal to acquire the network processor product line and ADSL chipset technology of Analog Devices Inc.

Ikanos said the deal will pave the way for it to create a VDSL-based suite of gateway products capable of piping in high-definition video services.

The deal, Ikanos noted, will complement its own 200 Mbps VDSL technology with Analog Device's "Fusiv" gateway processor, and extend Ikanos' existing Layer 1 capabilities with Layer 2 through Layer 7 gateway functions such as routing, security, VoIP and quality of service.

Ikanos will also gain access to gateway chipset deals forged by Analog Devices, including one with Sagem, which is powering its gateways with the Fusiv platform.

The deal will also expand the Ikanos team by about 220 engineers, about half of them based in India.
