EarthLink has tapped Motorola Inc. and Tropos Networks as key technology suppliers for the ISP's municipal WiFi network rollout plans. Financial terms were not disclosed.

EarthLink plans to deploy WiFi networks in five "major cities," but so far has gained approval in just two markets: Philadelphia, Pa. and Anaheim, Calif.

Under the vendor deal, Motorola will supply its MOTOwi4 product portfolio, including its Canopy backhaul gear and WiFi mesh equipment from Tropos, which will be installed on city light poles. Motorola is also on the hook to handle installation, system integration and support services for the resulting network.

"Our collaboration with Motorola and Tropos enables EarthLink to build state-of-the-art wireless networks that will provide these municipalities with low-cost, high-speed broadband access for residential and business customers, visitors and city employees," said Donald Berryman, president of EarthLink's Municipal Networks Division.
