Digital set-top market keeps chugging along

Global shipments of digital cable set-tops will grow for a second consecutive year, the first time that has happened since 2000-2001, according to a new report from In-Stat.

In-Stat, a research firm that shares the same parent company as CED, is attributing the sustained growth to demand for thick-client set-tops that support digital video recording and/or high-definition television. Modest increasing demand in Asia is also supporting that growth, In-Stat said.

"Demand for all types of digital cable set-top boxes, especially in North America and China, is going to remain quite strong in 2006 and 2007," said In-Stat Analyst Mike Paxton, in a statement.

Worldwide shipments reached 12.2 million in 2005, up from 10.8 million in 2004. The 2005 totals also marked the first time that shipments of advanced digital boxes exceeded shipments of "basic" digital set-tops.

Motorola Inc. and Scientific-Atlanta continued to take up the lion's share, accounting for 90 percent of all worldwide shipments thorough the first half of 2005. S-A is in the process of being acquired by Cisco Systems.
