Gemstar-TV Guide International has launched a mobile version of the TV Guide service through a partnership with Handmark.

The partnership will bring TV Guide's range of local TV listings, entertainment news and movie reviews to smartphones outfitted with the Palm OS and Windows Mobile platform. Support is also extended to Treo smartphones.

"This is one of several initiatives in the mobile space that Gemstar-TV Guide is pursuing," said Richard Cusick, Gemstar-TV Guide's SVP and general manager of digital media. "Mobile is a key area for the company and one that we are prioritizing across all of our products, services and partnerships."

Cable has been keen on the idea of mobile IPGs and applications that allow customers to set DVR recordings while they're on the go. Both Motorola and Scientific-Atlanta demonstrated such capabilities at the 2005 National Show.

Handmark has mobile content distribution pacts with partners such as CNN International, MobiTV, Sprint, Nextel, T-Mobile and Verizon, among others.
