Rogers Cable parent Rogers Communications Inc. will begin trials of two key next-generation cellular technologies that could have implications for their entire service offering strategy, including cable.
Teaming with Swedish mobile gear provider Ericsson, Rogers will begin tests of a Universal Mobile Telephone System (UMTS) network with a High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) overlay scheme. HSDPA's attraction is in its big bandwidth, which can theoretically run as high as 14 Megabits per second downstream. Both technologies are extensions of the GSM network technology Rogers already has deployed for its wireless services, which now reach 93 percent of Canada's population.
At the same time, Rogers will also test Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), a bridging technology that allows IP voice, video and data traffic to flow smoothly across multiple wireless and wireline networks. As such, IMS could allow Rogers to unify its cable and wireless networks under one service architecture, while HSDPA's high-bandwidth could support applications such as television streamed to mobile devices.
"This trial represents a first step in creating a unique opportunity to offer customers complete freedom to use, view, and access the information that matters most to them, when they want and wherever they are, thereby paving the way for the most innovative and valuable new services for Canadian consumers and businesses," said Rogers CEO Ted Rogers, in a release.
