In a major effort to drive digital video recorder (DVR) subscriptions TiVo Inc. is selling its Series2 40-hour box for $49.99 -- after a $150 mail-in rebate.

TiVo is making subscription additions a priority in the wake of a decision by DirecTV to stop marketing the TiVo service later this year as the DBS leader introduces DVR technology from NDS Group. Of the 3.6 million subs reported by TiVo in Q2, 2.3 million came way of DirecTV.

The DVR pioneer is coupling the big rebate with a national contest to find a "TiVo Ambassador" to spread the word about how time-shifting changes the way people watch television.
