Current Communications has selected silicon from Intellon Corp. to support the company's broadband over powerline (BPL) technology platform.

Under the deal, Current will tap Intellon's HomePlug with Turbo (INT550CS) chipset in its BPL product line. The companies said the products based on the chip will be compatible with the emerging and recently-ratified HomePlug AV standard.

Intellon's proprietary Turbo chips boost physical layer throughput to about 85 Mbps, with an application throughput of between 20 Mbps to 25 Mbps. HomePlug AV is expected to produce theoretical throughputs of 200 Mbps.
Current, through a joint venture with Cinergy Corp., is offering a range of BPL-based voice and data services.
