Widevine Technologies Inc. has hired Jim Veres to the post of VP of advanced engineering.
In that role, he will work on embedding Widevine's software-based Cypher Virtual SmartCard (VSC) technology into video processors and mobile device chipsets used in everything from set-top boxes, to digital video recorders and mobile phones.
The company said the embedding process will ensure that devices secured by the Widevine VSC will integrate into operator networks based on Widevine's security technology. In turn, it will also serve to protect premium content typically prohibited from distribution to portable media players.
Veres joins Widevine from Microsoft Corp. where he was a DirectX group manager.
