Comcast Cable is offering a set of Internet security tools to all of its 7.7 million cable modem subs for no additional charge.

The MSO is giving free access to three McAfee products: VirusScan, Personal Firewall Plus, and Privacy Service, which features parental controls that filter out inappropriate content and monitors activity to help prevent identify theft. Comcast said the package is valued at nearly $115.

In addition to the McAfee software, the operator is also offering a free, customizable toolbar that enables features such as spyware detection and removal, pop-up blockers and Internet search. This autumn, Comcast also plans to offer an anti-phishing system.

"We want our customers to have the best broadband Internet experience. Security is a critical component to that," said Greg Butz, senior vice president of marketing and business development for Comcast Online, in a statement.

Comcast is just the latest MSO to offer free security tools to their high-speed customers. Cox Communications, for example, also offers McAfee software.
