Hoping to give summer sales a boost, TiVo Inc. is offering 40-hour Series2 digital video recorders for $99. The promo, which cuts $100 from the MSRP, ends Aug. 20.

The automatic rebate also applies to TiVo's 80-hour box ($199) and 140-hour box ($249). TiVo is also cutting the price of DVR-DVD combos made by Humax, with the 40-hour version selling for $299, and an 80-hour box going for $399.

TiVo appears to be using the new pricing scheme to counter a recent study indicating that DVR usage is seasonal and tends to slow down in the summer. In addition to the lower pricing, TiVo is banking that consumers will want the boxes to catch and record first-run summer series such as Rock Star on CBS or Entourage and Six Feet Under on HBO.
