Sprint has launched a wireless high-speed data service that aims to provide mobile access to at least 60 metros by early next year. The dual-mode service will run on Sprint's PCS 1xRTT network and more than 19,000 WiFi access points, and offer average download speeds of 400 kbps to 700 kbps, peaking at about 2 Mbps.

Sprint's EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) service will start at $40 per month. The company will initially roll it out to airports and central business districts, and follow with launches in broader metros.

Pricing starts at $40 per month with a 40 megabyte cap. Customers who take that package and exceed the cap will not pay more than $90 per month, the company said. Sprint will also market an unlimited access plan for $80 per month.
