As part of a plan to remove some of the complexity from its DSL pricing structure, BellSouth has eliminated service activation fees and removed shipping and handling charges for modems and gateways.

The telco has also reduced the number of DSL pricing plans from a high-water mark of 21 to just three.

Under the new plan, the telco's FastAccess DSL Lite tier (256 kbps down/128 kbps up) will sell for $24.95 per month, its "Ultra" tier (1.5 Mbps/256 kbps) will cost $32.95 per month," and its "Xtreme" service (3 Mbps/384 kbps) will go for $42.95 per month.

BellSouth reduced the number of tiers after following the advice of customer surveys. "They [customers] told us they were looking for straightforward, predictable pricing," a BellSouth spokesman said.

BellSouth also reduced the price of modems and gateways to $75 per unit, down from $100 for a modem and $150 for a gateway. Customers now have the option to pay off the equipment in 10 monthly installments, or obtain it free (after rebate) if ordered online.
