Aiming to match recent cable speed upgrades, BellSouth said it will launch a 6 Mbps "Xtreme" DSL tier in the fourth quarter. The telco did not disclose pricing on the forthcoming tier.

The telco's FastAccess DSL Xtreme 6.0 service will complement other DSL tiers. BellSouth also markets a 3 Mbps/384 kbps tier, 1.5 Mbps/256 kbps service, and a "lite" tier that clocks in at 256 kbps/128 kbps.

Looking to the wireless side, BellSouth also announced plans to deploy a pre-WiMax wireless broadband service to "select" areas of Athens, Ga. starting in August, and follow with launches later this year in various Florida cities.

BellSouth will equip its pre-WiMax set-up with "Ripwave" gear from Navini Networks. The telco has been testing the technology in Daytona and Palatka, Fla.

BellSouth said it plans to use wireless broadband technology as an "alternative means" of high-speed services in rural areas not reached by DSL - a strategy also shared by WildBlue Communications, a satellite-based broadband service provider that recently signed up its first customer.
