Sprint lands trio of cable deals, passes milestone
In its drive to court cable partners, Sprint Corp. is announcing a new crop of MSO deals as well as passing a subscriber milestone.
The Overland Park, Kan.-based telecom provider has added Massillon Cable TV Inc.; Wave Broadband; and Blue Ridge Communications to its list of cable partners.
Under individual five-year agreements with the three, Sprint will provide voice-over-IP provisioning, switching, interconnections with the public switched telephony network, enhanced 911 service, local number portability and directory assistance to the cable operators. Sprint also is providing Internet data services to Massillon under its agreement.
Massillon launched its voice service in January, while Wave Broadband and Blue Ridge plan launches in the second half of 2005.
There is also the potential these deals could expand in the future to include wireless service. That is already beginning to happen. Last week it was widely reported that Time Warner Cable and Sprint are fielding wireless service in Kansas City.
Sprint also passed a milestone with more than 250,000 residential customers through its MSO affiliations.
"Sprint has established itself as the partner of choice for cable companies of all sizes that want to deliver a compelling new bundle of services to their consumers," said Jim Patterson, vice president of wholesale and carrier markets and cable for Sprint.
