Shaw Communications has launched IP telephony services in Edmonton.

The primary-line service, dubbed Shaw Digital Phone, offers local calling and unlimited long distance calling within Canada and the continental U.S. for $55 per month (about U.S. $44). The service also supports traditional features such as voicemail, call display, call forwarding, three-way calling, call return and call waiting.

Shaw also offers the service in Calgary. In that market, more than 75 percent of the MSO's VoIP subs are porting their phone numbers, said company CEO Jim Shaw.

Last year, Shaw announced a partnership with Bell Canada, whereby the MSO would tap the telco to provide interconnections to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and long distance terminations. Shaw has also named Siemens Carrier Networks as its initial supplier of softswitch technology.
