Akamai Technologies and Macromedia have teamed on a video-on-demand (VOD) platform based on Flash technology.

The combo enables Akamai's EdgePlatform customers to offer on-demand streaming services to Macromedia Flash players.

The companies envision the platform delivering a range of media, including movies, TV shows, product demonstrations, corporate announcements and sales training.

Akamai said it presently serves "several gigabits per second" of downloadable content — including some video — based on Flash.
