PerfTech Bulletin Services Ltd. said it delivered its first broadcast of an Amber Alert notice to a targeted group of high-speed Internet users late last month.
PerfTech, which markets a system that sends electronic bulletins directly to data customers at wire-speed, sent its initial Amber Alert notice to all Wide Open West (WOW!) high-speed data customers in Ohio on Jan. 27.
PerfTech said 82 percent of those targeted received the Alert within the first 24 hours of its issuance, noting that the figure was equal to the exact number of customers who browsed the Internet during that time span. Twenty-seven percent of the group receiving the message clicked through to CodeAmber.org for further details.
It marked the first time WOW! had used PerfTech's platform to issue an Amber Alert. The MSO also uses the system to send electronic bulletins about service events, to alert customers about potentially harmful computer viruses, and to promote new cable services. WOW! has the ability to send those messages to a single subscriber, a demographically targeted group, or to its entire customer base.
PerfTech's platform is comprised of a "Bulletin Director" device that resides at aggregation routers or at the cable modem termination system (CMTS), and a "Bulletin Manager," which schedules bulletins and handles other IP activities that use subscriber account identification information.
