Scientific-Atlanta is populating its Explorer 8300-series digital set-tops with a new silicon-based tuner from Microtune Inc.

S-A's HD-capable Explorer 8300 features multi-room, dual-tuner digital video recording capabilities. The box also features two Microtune's MicroTuner MT2121 tuners, which handle radio frequency transmission and reception of video, audio and data. A generation ahead of traditional "canned" tuners, Microtune's quarter-inch chipset is fabricated in silicon germanium.

"Meeting the rigorous performance demands of new digital and high-definition TV services requires a multi-tuner set-top box architecture based on innovative technology," said Microtune COO Albert Taddiken, in a release.
