Movielink reaches download milestone, seals Best Buy deal
Movielink said it has completed its one-millionth download roughly two years after the studio-backed Internet-based video rental service first got off the ground.
Movielink is a joint venture of MGM Studios, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Studios and Warner Bros. Studios. Depending on the title, Movielink downloads sell for between $1.99 and $4.99.
Hitting the milestone "demonstrates the growing appeal of Internet-delivered movies and the loyalty of our active user base," said Movielink CEO Jim Ramo, in a statement. "Whether people enjoy Movielink movies while traveling, on their desktop or connected to a living room monitor, our growing catalog of films, enhanced ease of use, reliability, and quality are helping to launch this new distribution system toward mass-market appeal."
To keep those mass-market ambitions moving forward, Movielink also announced a deal with Best Buy, under which the retailer will market Movielink "Movie Cards" in all 642 store locations. Best Buy will offer the cards as a free "gift with purchase" to customers who buy Microsoft Corp. 's Media Center PC, and separately as a $20 gift card.
