Broadcom chips in on 'entry-level' DBS boxes

Broadcom Corp. has launched the BCM7312, a low-cost chipset for entry-level DBS set-tops.
The chipset sports an MPEG-2 audio/video decoder, 266 MHz CPU core, and an integrated front-end RF tuner. It also incorporates a dual USB 2.0 host controller and support for DBS conditional access systems.
Broadcom has priced the chipset at $11.99 per unit in quantities of 100,000.
DirecTV is the first to announce support for the BCM7312.
