Time Warner does Big Apple VoIP
Time Warner Cable has extended digital phone service to customers in the New York area, with packages starting at $39.95 per month when it's bundled with cable modem service.
Cities covered by the service include Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island and Mt. Vernon.
The MSO, which offers the IP-based telephony service via a partnership with Sprint, is marketing a package that offers unlimited local, in-state and long distance calls to all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Canada and "most" U.S. territories. The service also offers traditional Caller ID, Call Waiting and Caller ID Blocking features. Voice mail costs an additional $3.95 per month.
Unlike some VoIP services, Time Warner's offering includes e911 capabilities and access to 611, 411 and the NYC 311 "hotline."
The addition of New York adds to an already aggressive VoIP rollout plan by Time Warner Cable. The MSO expects to offer the service in most, if not all, of its markets by year-end.
