S-A profits on DVRs, digital 'overlay' platform

Scientific-Atlanta notched a Q1 profit of $55.9 million (36 cents per share), up 31 percent from a year ago, thanks to solid set-top shipments and momentum for the company's digital overlay platform. S-A sales were $452.7 million, up 14 percent.

S-A sold 1.032 million Explorer set-tops and 416,000 WebSTAR cable modems during the period, though transmission gear, with sales of $119.5 million, dipped slightly year-over-year.

The company continued to see solid demand for its DVR-capable set-tops, reporting sales of 397,000 units during the quarter. Of that total, 248,000 were standard-definition models, and 149,000 contained HD capabilities. About 40,000 set-tops with on-board DVRs were shipped to Cablevision Systems as the MSO preps a launch.

S-A also sold 92,000 HD boxes sans the DVR component.

S-A also reported on the status of digital overlay, a technique that enables S-A digital boxes with the company's PowerKEY conditional access system to run on systems that operate another legacy CA platform such as Motorola Broadband 's Mediacipher.

To date, Time Warner Cable is the only MSO to commit to the overlay, having deployed it in markets such as Houston, Texas; St. Augustine, Fla.; Terre Haute, Ind.; and Clarksburg, W.V. S-A estimated it shipped more than 46,000 Explorer 8000 units into overlay systems during Q1.

Michael Harney, president of S-A's subscriber networks division and a corporate SVP, reiterated Thursday that other MSOs have shown interest in the overlay, but was not yet ready to announce additional trials or deployments.
