Game on (demand) for SeaChange

SeaChange International said it can stream high-end games via its video-on-demand platform following an integration partnership with Softbank Broadmedia (SBBM). The platform will be enabled through SeaChange's VODlink set-top software, which is also being used by some operators to complement their VOD titles with DVD-like features.

The combination enables standard digital set-tops to run gaming applications without any customer-side upgrades, the companies said. It does this by streaming the game's graphics and sound from the headend down to the set-top box, which decodes it on the TV screen in real time. The game programs execute on SeaChange servers rather than at the set-top, which only requires enough processing horsepower to receive the stream.

"Our co-development efforts enable broadband providers to easily tap into a huge, new market and to redefine on-demand television and the set-top experience," says George Breen, president of Digital Video Arts, a SeaChange subsidiary.
