Gemstar-TV Guide remained on a licensing roll Wednesday, announcing that Hitachi Ltd. has inked a multi-year deal to incorporate the TV Guide On Screen interactive program guide (IPG) into digital TVs tagged for North America.

Financial terms were not disclosed, though Gemstar-TV Guide will receive a fee based on the number of units sold that include the IPG.

Gemstar has cut similar deals recently with Sony Corp. and Panasonic. Other CE licensees include JVC, LG Electronics, Mitsubishi, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, Sharp, Thomson, TiVo Inc. and Toshiba.

Hitachi plans to offer the guide in TVs with CableCARD capabilities. The CableCARDs, which separate out the conditional access component typically baked into digital cable set-tops, is a primary component of the FCC-approved Plug & Play agreement for unidirectional, set-top-free digital televisions.
