Cogeco offers all-digital option

Canadian MSO Cogeco Cable said 91 percent of its customers in Quebec can now enjoy an all-digital channel lineup.

Cogeco still offers service to analog customers, but is simulcasting a digital lineup to customers who opt for that service. Charter Communications has done something similar in Long Beach, Calif.

To support the all-digital offering, Cogeco has expanded its line of digital set-tops from Motorola Broadband. Among the additions is Motorola's DCT700, an all-digital set-top introduced at the 2003 National Show in Chicago. Capable of supporting electronic program guides and interactive services such as video-on-demand, the DCT700 sells for less than $100 per unit.

Cogeco is also supplying a range of more advanced Motorola boxes that sport both analog and digital tuning capabilities, including the DCT2500 — a souped-up version of the widely deployed DCT2000 — and the DCT6208, a box that features on-board high-definition television and digital video recording capabilities.

"Based on our studies, our customers are increasingly opting for digital cable television, given its impressive flexibility and superior reliability," said Cogeco VP of Marketing and Sales Ron Perrotta, in a release.
