A mix of 24 vendors and operators participated (see table) this summer in an interoperability event for OCAP (OpenCable Application Platform), a CableLabs-specified middleware for OpenCable hosts and a likely candidate for the forthcoming two-way Plug & Play agreement for set-top-free digital televisions.
CableLabs, which hosted the event, said it marked the third in a series of OCAP interops. The latest featured the porting of OCAP to hardware platforms from 11 different manufacturers, and handled interoperability testing for a variety of backend support systems and development and test tools.
Among specifics, a version created by OCAP Development LLC, the joint venture of Time Warner Cable and Comcast, was demonstrated on a Scientific-Atlanta Explorer 3250 platform, and the Osmosys OCAP stack was teamed with set-tops from Advanced Digital Broadcast (ADB).
Seeing Time Warner's electronic program guide and other EPGs running on 11 different hardware platforms on the same system "was totally groundbreaking," said MSO SVP of Subscriber Technologies and Advanced Engineering Mike Hayashi, who also heads the OpenCable certification board.
