Adding more technical fuel to its Internet Protocol video-on-demand products, Kasenna Inc. has been awarded an additional three patents covering media streaming indexing, content storage and playback.

The Mountain View provider of IP VOD gear now holds 11 core patents with six more still pending. The three additions stake its claim on several key elements of VOD technology, including one that implements VCR "trick modes" allowing viewers to pause, rewind and fast-forward video streamed from a network server. Another patent deals with techniques to access large content libraries and shift content between different storage schemes. The third new patent covers Kasenna's header injection system used to playback content sequences so that transitions between clips are handled smoothly.

"Kasenna's innovations are igniting the market for on-demand video by making it easier and more cost-effective to deploy the world's most advanced video services," said Satish Menon, Kasenna's CTO, in a release. "These new patents show the continuing strength of our technology development resources, and add to our long history of technical leadership in IP video."
