Now a player in the cable modem termination system market with its acquisition of ADC's Cuda line, BigBand Networks Inc. showed off its PacketCable Multimedia-based integration for the platform at this week's CableLabs summer conference in Keystone, Colo.

In the demonstration, BigBand took standard variable bit rate digital feeds delivered over satellite, assigned guaranteed bandwidth using software partner Cable Matrix 's on-demand service platform and then funneled it into its Cuda CMTS. The video content was then forwarded via an IP DOCSIS channel to cable modems for distribution to either a Wi-Fi home network linking PCs or to an IP set-top box.

Cable Matrix's PacketCable Multimedia-based platform adds dynamic quality of service elements to the IP technology, allowing guaranteed delivery of content. The scheme has not gained formal PacketCable Multimedia certification as yet, but it is an important step in BigBand's product development.

"The standard was leveraged in this demonstration to enhance integration of our CMTS and digital video platforms, achieved just six weeks after completing the IP Cable combination that added the Cuda CMTS to BigBand Networks' platform portfolio," said Ran Oz, BigBand's co-founder and chief technology officer, in a release. "Together, these leading products enable IP devices to access any content including high-quality video programming."
