DVR and HD demand drive S-A in Q4

Solid demand for DVR- and HD-capable set-tops helped Scientific-Atlanta Inc. post Q4 sales of $458.8 million, up 14 percent from a year ago. S-A also recorded Q4 earnings of $70.2 million (45 cents per share), up from $47.4 million (31 cents per share).

In the quarter, S-A shipped 1.052 million Explorer set-tops and 360,000 WebSTAR cable modems. S-A sold 383,000 Explorer 8000 DVR products, up 143 percent from a year ago. Among those figures, S-A sold 277,000 standard-definition DVRs and 106,000 HD DVRs. The vendor also sold 121,000 HD boxes without on-board DVRs.

Among other milestones, S-A said it shipped a "small number" of DOCSIS-capable Explorer 8300 boxes to Cablevision Systems Corp. to support trials. S-A also disclosed that its gear has been installed as a digital "overlay" to an undisclosed number of systems based on the Motorola Broadband conditional access.

Earlier this year, Time Warner Cable confirmed it was testing S-A's overlay product in Beaumont, Texas.

Separately, S-A confirmed it received a complaint naming the company and two officers as defendants in a purported securities action suite filed in the Southern District of New York. The suit stems from Adelphia Communications investors who allege that some set-top transactions between the MSO and the vendor resulted in violations of anti-fraud provisions. S-A said it intends to fight the claim.
