DivXNetworks Inc., developer of DivX video compression technology, announced today it will be powering a video-on-demand (VOD) service for Italian telco company Wind, which will offer the service on its Web portal,

DivXNetworks will provide the service with its Open Video System, a platform that delivers secure DVD-quality video over IP networks. According to the company, the system has been up and running for more than two years and offers users upwards of 17,000 full-length titles to choose from with security maintained via a digital rights management (DRM) platform.

Users can rent or purchase the movies and begin watching them almost immediately after beginning the download thanks to "progressive download" technology, the company said. Once downloaded, the files are seven to 10 times smaller than traditional DVD files.

"Libero subscribers can now enjoy a wide range of DVD-quality video content directly on their PCs and will soon be able to play back those same files on a variety of DivX-certified DVD players and portable video players," said Kevin Hell, chief marketing officer and managing director of DivXNetworks, in a release.

The service was scheduled to launch this week, according to a company spokesman.
