Video caller ID application hits S.C. TV screens

Cable customers in South Carolina a better picture of their incoming voice calls thanks to a new deployment of Interactive TV systems provider Integra5 Communications' technology.

Integra5 has teamed up with South Carolina cable provider Comporium Communications to deploy its Visual Caller ID system, allowing digital cable subscribers to see an incoming voice caller's number and name on their TV screens. The information pops up approximately a second before the first ring.

In the Comporium deployment, the system is integrated with Pioneer Digital Technologies Inc.'s Passport interactive programming guide. Using a remote control, the subscribers can modify the incoming call display on their TV screens, review the last calls received or disable the display. The system can support multiple phone lines and multiple TVs in a household.

Designed to strengthen cablers voice, video and data bundles, the Visual Caller ID application is driven by a UniTV server placed in the MSO's local headend. No added equipment is needed at the customer premise.

Comporium, which is also a local incumbent local exchange carrier, serves more than 55,000 customers in the Rock Hill, S.C. area, offering digital and high-definition TV as well as cable modem Internet service.

"Working with Integra5 has enabled both of our companies to take leadership roles in deploying telephony and messaging applications that work together with television infrastructure."
