Tollgrade Communications is boosting its VoIP testing capabilities with the help of technology from Telchemy Inc. Under the deal, Tollgrade will integrate Telchemy's VQattest active VoIP call testing system with its Cheetah IP Service Assurance Solution.

The Cheetah product line monitors for faults and performance in HFC, DOCSIS and IP networks. The VQattest incorporates VQmon technology to monitor the performance of VoIP calls, generating metrics for listening and conversational quality and providing diagnostic information about the severity and distribution of packet loss, discards and jitter.

The licensing agreement applies to fixed monitoring and test units in the HFC cable distribution network. By layering Telchemy's VQmon technology onto to the Cheetah DOCSIS transponders distributed throughout cable company networks, the Cheetah IP solution will enable active test calls that verify cable telephony system performance and support rapid detection of VoIP service quality problems, the companies said.
