Pace Micro Technology is giving a live demo of a DSG (DOCSIS Set-top Gateway) for the U.S. digital cable market here at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in Orlando, Fla.

Pace's DC515 box, based on Motorola Broadband's MediaCipher conditional access platform, uses an integrated DOCSIS channel to carry out-of-band (OOB) set-top signals.

Operators are considering DSG-enabled set-tops to pipe data for interactive program guide data and other applications.

Pace's set-top demo will feature a messaging application that uses a DSG data tunnel, a method that replaces legacy DVS-178 OOB messages, and IP-based video streaming.

"DSG offers cable operators the new out-of-band communications that can be used for conditional access, messaging and new services, while leveraging the investment made in a high-speed data network," noted Pace Chief Technologist Chris Dinallo, in a release.
