Time Warner Cable said it will use a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) from Esmertec to help the MSO develop an implementation of OCAP (Open Cable Application Platform).

OCAP, a middleware platform specified by CableLabs, will populate digital set-tops, digital televisions and other "hosts" based on the OpenCable specification. OCAP is also expected to play a key role in an upcoming two-way version of "Plug & Play," an initiative for set-top-free digital TVs.

Switzerland-based Esmertec showed off a commercial OCAP solution featuring its "Jbed" platform at the 2003 Western Cable Show.
