Motorola Broadband said it will use technology from AgileTV to enable cable customers to control digital set-top functions, including channel navigation, via voice commands.
Motorola said MSOs have the ability today to integrate Agile TV's voice-recognition technology in the widely deployed DCT2000 digital set-top platform.
With Agile TV's technology, users can navigate a wide swath of digital programming by simply "talking" to their TV through a special remote control outfitted with a microphone. By way of example, the device can comprehend simple phrases such as "Find the Sopranos" and "Find movies with Julia Roberts." The technology currently recognizes more than 100,000 phrases, the companies said.
USA Media has been alpha testing the platform for about 15 months. Insight Communications also has an investment in AgileTV.
Agile TV's platform "greatly enhances the value of digital, should help the industry reduce churn, and gives us a unique product advantage over satellite," said USA Media COO Jim Faircloth.
